Thompson takes top-5 finish in Salute to Veterans Tour stop at Kossuth County
The last week of July was a busy one for Cody Thompson as the Sioux City, Iowa, driver competed in four IMCA-sanctioned Modified events.
On Monday, Thompson began the week with a visit to his home track – the 3/8-mile Park Jefferson Speedway (Jefferson, South Dakota) for the Dave Riley Memorial Race. Thompson steered his Dakota Coating Solutions No. 25c ride to third place in his heat, putting him in the 12th position for the 20-lap, $1,056-to-win A-Main. Thompson ran into trouble just past halfway and did not finish, recording a 13th-place result in the 17-car field.
On Wednesday evening, Thompson took part in the first event of the three-race Hunting with Heroes Salute to Veterans Tour at Clay County Fair Speedway (Spencer, Iowa). Thirty-nine IMCA Modifieds filled the pit area with a $2,000 top prize on the line. Thompson drove from seventh to fifth in his heat on the 3/8-mile track but was unable to start the B-Feature.
The following evening, the tour moved to Kossuth County Speedway (Algona, Iowa) for a $3,500-to-win program that saw 33 IMCA Modified entries. Thompson was runner-up in his heat race on the 4/10-mile oval and took the green flag for the 25-lap A-Main in the fifth position. He picked up one spot to record a fourth-place result, trailing Todd Stinehart, Jerry Flippo and Joel Rust across the start-finish line. Cody Knecht was fifth.
Friday night’s scheduled Dale DeFrance Memorial at Marshalltown Speedway (Marshalltown, Iowa) fell to inclement weather, meaning Thompson next took the track for the third and final event of the Salute to Veterans Tour at Boone Speedway (Boone, Iowa) on Saturday.
With $5,000 up for grabs for the race winner, 57 IMCA Modifieds descended on the famed 3/8-mile Boone facility. After finishing fourth in his heat race, Thompson advanced to the night’s 25-lap main event via a B-Feature victory. He both started and finished 19th in the night’s A-Main.
